Landscape & Plant Studies

This gallery contains all my work pertaining to nature, records of places, particularly in Kent, loved gardens, and floral or plant studies.

All the works have been done in situ, or from life, and cover a variety of media, pencil, pastel or watercolour. These works reflect a fascination and love for nature. Landscapes have come about from my love of exploring the countryside. Only by being in a place can you capture the ambience of a place. There is not just observation and recording that goes into a picture, but a sense of the place, a feeling of being present that is transmitted to the viewer.

Depicting the growth of plants and floral studies are a passion of mine. The more complex and detailed the study, the more I’m lured into the composition. As I draw, I find flowers move, and leaves change direction of travel by the hour! Roses are the most restless, and the way leaves and stems intertwine are apt to change altogether by the next day. So I have to work fast. Once the basic composition is set down on paper, I can then work more leisurely on colour and tone.
